There are only 108 days until the BIG Blokart event!
2008-02-26 Because of an extremely warm winter and no-ice-at-all conditions in the Curonian Lagoon Lithuanian Ice-Blokart Opens took place on 23-24th February on Galvė lake ice in Trakai, Lithuania. The ice was perfectly sailable, 15-20 cm thick. This proved to be a real European Ice-Blokarting Championship as less than a quarter of participants were lithuanians. 6 british, 4 dutch, 3 estonians and 4 lithuanians totaly 17 pilots were competing in 2 weight divisions. Lightweight division (<85 kg) comprised 11 participants and was divided into 2 subdivisions. Saturday with 10-14 m/s wind had almost the ideal condition to ice-blokart. There were 4 play-off heats carried out in each lightweight division to clear up 6 best lightweight pilots. Heavyweight pilots had their all 8 heats on Saturday, because there was a drop in a wind forecasted for Sunday. Sunday morning 6 best pilots met on the ice for the final races. 5 heats were carried out in very light winds (4-6 m/s). The event was closed by the awards ceremony and the expectancy was expressed that the World Ice-Blokart Championship will be carried out in 2009 in the Baltics. Lithuanian capital Vilnius is going to be the Cultural Capital of the Europe in the Year 2009, so maybe Trakai will host this event again? Prize winners of the Championship:

Videoclip: youtube.com Though the latest forcasts showed no wind luckily they were wrong and 20 competitors 2 of which from Estonia and 2 from Netherlands competed in all three weight categories (lightweight <65 kg, middleweight 65-90 kg and heavyweight >90 kg). The event was held for the first time in Lithuania and the Baltics and was located in Nida, Curonian spit, a place which is on the Unesco heritage list. The competition took place on an one kilometer long unused asphalt airfield 3 km away from Nida center on 2007-11-17&18. Saturday morning at the opening ceremony local municipality representatives gave a speach after which the Lithuanian flag was raised by the head of the race committee Tom Maas. The anemometer showed only 3 m/s west wind. The lightweights had their first start in a short distance. After a second start the wind rose till 4 m/s and lightweights even showed some two wheel blokarting. The starts for the middleweights and heavyweights were postponed until 14.00 o‘clock. The wind rose till 5 m/s. Heavyweights started very slowly, as the speed keeping secret was the scuffing of tyres. But for the last heat even heavyweights had to hold on their sheet ropes and show their true sailing abilities as the wind got up to 6-7 m/s. In the middleweight class 10 competitors were competing in two subdivisions in order to find out the top 3 in each subdivision who will go to the finals on Sunday. Saturday evening everybody went to the restaurant „Nidus" were the videos of the day were played an the results were calculated and displayed. Afterparty was held in the latino concert „El quadro" and after that in „Metal on Metal" - the best dj‘s project in Lithuania. Sunday forcasts showed 6 m/s south wind, which was true. Lightweights were flying with 4 m sails and demonstrating the two wheeled blokarting very often. After two lightweight heats the two minutes horn was given to the heavyweights. Afterwards the top 6 of middleweights started racing to find out the leaders among them. With 4 heats in a row middleweights ended the first Lithuanian landsailing Blokarts championship. Everybody enjoyed the army tent which was set up for the event and soldiers who provided with hot tea and hot soldier porridge. 14.00 o‘clock the vice-mayor of Neringa municipality Arunas Burksas greeted the participants and afterwards shook hands with the prize winners and awarded them with diplomas, medals and trophies as well as prizes from the sponsors.
